The University of Arkansas was established in 1871 as the land-grant university for the state. In the first year only 8 students attended classes. Early classes occurred in a temporary structure until the completion of Old Main which was finished in 1875. The mascot for the university is the Razorback which the 1909 football coined in describing the win by his players over a rival. He described the players as “like a wild band of Razorback hogs”. In 1910, the student body voted to make the Razorback the official mascot. Today, the university spans over 412 acres providing nearly 200 academic programs in more than 130 buildings. Student enrollment last year was 24,537.
